The scholarships include air tickets, financial aid of 200,000 won (around R$730) for installation in the country; a monthly amount of 900 thousand won (approximately R$3,300) for housing and food; health insurance, and the total costs of the institution’s annual fee. There are also awards that can add to this value in recognition of the candidate’s good performance in the proficiency exam. The value of the scholarship is enough to live in the country , but it is important to remember that larger cities, such as the capital Seoul, have higher costs.
The scholarship covers a period of four years of study and can be used for undergraduate courses at any of the country’s universities. Some courses, however, are not eligible, such as medicine, dentistry, pharmacy and architecture, as they last longer than four years.
Korean course included
For students who do not speak Korean, those selected will take a year of Korean language courses at an institution designated by the National Institute for International Education (NIIED). Once they reach the level of proficiency, level 3 of TOPIK (Korean proficiency certificate), they will be able to start classes at the chosen university. As a result, the scholarship lasts for five years.
Who can apply?
There are two routes through which it is possible to apply for undergraduate scholarships in South Korea. One of them is through the South Korean embassy in Brazil; the other, through South Korean universities.
In both cases, the prerequisites include: being Brazilian, being born after March 1, 1999, having completed high school by December 2023 and having a minimum academic performance of 80%. It is also necessary to demonstrate proficiency in English, through tests such as the TOEFL. For descendants of South Koreans who wish to apply for the scholarship, proof of descent is also required.
NIIED Scholarships for Undergraduate Studies in Korea
In addition to the embassy system, there is another way to obtain undergraduate scholarships in Korea, in the areas of Engineering and Natural Sciences. In this case, the application is made by the Korean university of interest, responsible for nominating the student for financial support from NIIED . It is worth noting that, for those who choose the route through the embassy, it is not possible to enroll directly at the university.
The benefits package includes airline tickets, housing assistance, annual tuition at the destination university and health insurance. In addition, a monthly fee for maintenance in the country. There is also a year of Korean classes, prior to the four years of college.
