The University of Bologna (Unibo), one of the oldest in Europe and founded in 1088, is accepting applications for a wide scholarship program for PhD programs. There will be, in all, 982 scholarship holders chosen, who can choose programs in different human, biological and exact areas. Unibo is a public institution and the second best higher education institution in Italy.
The aim of the fellowships is to provide high-level training courses for research and innovative activities. In this year’s edition, two student profiles will be admitted:
- 214 fellows in programs to develop professional skills applied to research activities focused on universities, public administrations and cultural heritage;
- 768 fellows in programs aimed at developing professional skills with a focus on business innovation. Programs aimed at the business sector include activities developed with companies.
About the University of Bologna
The University of Bologna is the oldest university in the west and is considered to be the oldest in the world in continuous operation. Alumni include historical figures such as astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus, writer Umberto Eco, film directors Pier Paolo Pasolini and Michelangelo Antonioni, philosopher Erasmus of Rotterdam and two Popes, Gregory XIII and Gregory XV.
How Scholarships Work
As in many European countries, PhD and PhD students are remunerated for the research work carried out during their studies. However, remuneration is not considered an employment relationship, which allows students to work to supplement their income.
The total gross amount of the scholarship is €69,991. During the course, students receive a net allowance of €1,200 per month, in addition to the possibility to request extra financial support for other research-related expenses. Students who hold a Master’s degree or equivalent by October 31, 2023 can apply.
PhD programs last 3 to 4 years. In them, students learn to develop innovative and original research, damage control skills, coping with complex problems, managing unforeseen events and teamwork.

How to apply
To apply for PhD programs, it is necessary to complete the registration and application process through the student portal ( available here).
After logging in and registering, it is necessary to select “ Admission application” , then “ PhD program” and “ Next” ; Then, the candidate must choose the PhD program he wants to do and send the requested documentation.
